Discover KABUKI - KABUKI Appreciation Class for Foreigners

Program: Tsuchiya Chikara
Participants: 30 Students

On Thursday, June 20, 2025, international students from Yokohama National University (YNU) attended "Discover KABUKI – An Experience for International Audiences and Beginners" at Sunpearl Arakawa. This event was part of the Cross-Cultural Experience Program, supported by the YNU Alumni Association Koyukai.

The featured performance, Tsuchiya Chikara, is a side story from Chūshingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), based on the historical Ako Incident of 1702 during the Edo period. The play focuses on episodes involving the Ako ronin (masterless samurai) and the people connected to them.

Before the performance, a session titled "How to Appreciate KABUKI" provided participants with a Japanese-language introduction to the key elements of Kabuki theater, including its unique features and how to enjoy the performance. English subtitles were also available, and detailed explanations of the plot—centered on the Ako retainers' night raid—helped the audience better understand and engage with the story.

During the performance, English subtitles and audio guides in both Japanese and English were provided. The students were able to enjoy the distinctive Kabuki artistry, including its traditional costumes, makeup, music, and powerful storytelling.

Participants shared positive feedback, saying:?"The explanation beforehand made the performance easier to follow."?"I really enjoyed the beautiful and traditional performing arts."?"It was interesting to see how modern and historical Japanese differ so much."
This program offered students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of traditional Japanese culture and broaden their interest in other cultural traditions as well.
