Institutes for Advanced Research

先端科学高等研究院

Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS)

The Institute of Advanced Sciences is a research-focused body strategically concentrating fields in which world-class scientific research is being conducted at Yokohama National University (YNU). In addition to the Quantum Information Research Center and the Advanced Chemical Energy Research Center, IAS includes the Information and Physical Security Research Unit, the Cell-based Bioassay Research Unit, the Ultra-Power-Saving Magnonic Devices Research Unit and the Electrical Energy Conversion Research Unit. IAS strives to strengthen excellence and build a reputation as a world-class international research center to further advance YNU’s research capabilities.

Quantum Information Research Center

To prepare for the quantum information society of the future, the Quantum Information Research Center was set up as a global research center to promote practical research for creating large-scale quantum computer networks or a global quantum internet by creating new fields combining quantum computers, quantum encryption communications, quantum sensing and other quantum technology-related areas and conducting cutting-edge research in those areas.

Advanced Chemical Energy Research Center

Energy and environment issues have risen to become some of the most prominent challenges of the 21st century; the alarm bells have long been sounded on the continued massive use of fossil fuels. The Advanced Chemical Energy Research Center was founded as a new chemical energy research center focusing on electrochemistry, one of YNU’s core strengths, to help build a decarbonized society no longer dependent on fossil fuels and make efficient use of energy, including renewable energy, the final objective being to achieve a sustainable society.

Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (IMS)

The Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences is a research-focused body strategically concentrating fields in which world-class interdisciplinary research is being conducted at YNU. It consists of the Center for Creation of Symbiosis Society with Risk, the Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center, the Research Center for Sustainability, Resilience and Well-being and the Research Center for Next-Generation Health Technology. It also includes the Co-Innovation Dynamics Research Unit, the Biosphere Research Unit and the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit for Innovation and Co-Creation. IMS aims to strengthen diversity and build a reputation as a world-class international research center to further advance YNU’s research capabilities.

Center for Creation of Symbiosis Society with Risk

To build a society realizing the concept of symbiosis with risk, YNU’s Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences, the Institute of Advanced Sciences and other bodies conduct research and activities for the social application of cutting-edge research findings and search for ways of dealing with risk symbiosis and achieving the optimum balance between positive and negative risks as a society in order to establish safety and security and create a vibrant society.

Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center

The Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center was established to contribute to creating a safe, vibrant and sustainable society through mitigating damage risks from typhoons and achieving decarbonization by harnessing wind energy. Typhoon researchers throughout Japan, as well as researchers in the fields of electrical engineering, naval engineering, jurisprudence and economics and business administration, where YNU has a distinctive record, share these objectives. The Center is a research base working with other advanced technological research centers and units to develop a new area of scholarly research on typhoons and speed up social application of new technologies. By pioneering in the unique subject of typhoon research ahead of the world, the Center, the first in Japan to specialize in this area, will drive research in the field.

Research Center for Sustainability, Resilience and Well-being

The Research Center for Sustainability, Resilience and Well-being was created in April 2023 as a body carrying out comprehensive academic and practical research and education. In answer to the questions “What is true abundance?” and “Is it possible to create a sustainable society?,” the Center seeks to create a fruitful society where everyone can deploy their qualities and capabilities to the fullest to live enriching lives and continue giving hopes and dreams to future generations. The Center includes the Long-life Healthy Infrastructure Laboratory, the Digital Twin Mega City Laboratory and the Social Network Management Laboratory, which conduct research on those topics under a Disaster Prevention Academy conducting education and research activities on a university-wide basis.

Research Center for Next-Generation Health Technology

The Research Center for Next-Generation Health Technology, inaugurated in April 2023, is a research base promoting interdisciplinary research and speeding up social implementation of innovative technology fusing areas spanning health, medical care and welfare, and systematically and organically implementing tie-ups with local communities, between industry, academia and government, and between medicine and engineering to help ensure sustainable economic development and improve national quality of life amid the challenges posed by a super-aging society. The Center consists of five laboratories to address the main areas of its research.

Semiconductor and Quantum Integrated Electronics Research Center

This center was established in April 2024 with the aim of accelerating academic research and societal implementation of new technologies in the field of semiconductor and quantum integrated electronics. It focuses on strengthening research capabilities in the "post-processing" phase of semiconductors to contribute to the sustainability of the semiconductor industry in our country. Through collaboration with domestic and international research institutions and semiconductor-related companies, the center aims to enhance research capabilities, provide education for graduate students through practical cutting-edge research, and offer reskilling opportunities for professionals. The ultimate goal is to foster excellent research talent in the semiconductor "post-processing" field and contribute to innovation in society.
