令和3年度 卒業生?修了生への式辞

　皆さん、学部卒業?大学院修了、誠におめでとうございます。本日、学部卒業生1693名、大学院修了生807名及び専門職学位課程修了生22名の方々が常盤台キャンパスから飛び立つことになりました。皆さんの在学中の勉学、研究に向けたご努力に敬意を表します。そして、今まで卒業生?修了生の皆さんを温かく見守ってこられたご家族、関係者の皆様にも、本学へのご支援?ご協力に感謝申し上げるとともに、お慶び申し上げます。
　このたび、uedbet体育_uedbet体育投注-彩客网彩票推荐の状況に鑑み、やむなく卒業生?修了生のみの対面にて式典を挙行することといたしました。ご家族の皆様が楽しみにこの日を待っておられたお気持ちを考えますと、辛い決断ではございますが、皆様の健康確保を最優先に考えた判断をいたしました。卒業生?修了生の皆さんは、4月から就職?進学など新たな進路に羽ばたいていかれます。その際、安心して新たな一歩を踏み出せるよう、また国内外での感染をこれ以上広げないよう、皆様にご理解を賜りたく、お願い申し上げます。このような形での式典となりましたが、卒業生?修了生の皆さんが本学での学びを貫徹し、新しい門出を迎えることは、本学教職員一同誠に大きな慶びです。本学の教職員を代表して、改めてお祝い申し上げます。
　さて、「知の統合型大学として世界水準の研究大学を目指すこと」を学長メッセージとして、発出し続けてきました。このことと、コロナ禍について考えたいと思います。14世紀の黒死病＝ペストの流行、すなわち「ペスト禍」が15世紀以降のルネサンスをもたらした一要因であるという説があります。人類はペスト禍を経験し、自らの文化や文明に対する深い絶望から脱出するため、生と死への深遠な思考が必要であり、１世紀もの時間をかけ、ルネサンスを勝ち得たという説です。コロナ禍はどうでしょう。世界中で多くの方が大変苦しんだ、あるいは、現在も苦しんでいることは事実ですが、人類は、近代以降獲得してきた科学技術の知見を基に、大変短い時間でワクチンを開発し、様々な社会システムを活用し、コロナウイルスに立ち向かっていると思います。現代の自然科学、社会科学、人文科学の発展がコロナウイルスとの戦いの基盤です。ワクチンが製薬会社や大学の研究室で開発されたとしても、安全に大量に生産され、生産されたワクチンが皆さんのところに確実に届けられ、安心と安全の名の下に接種されなければなりません。すなわち、自然科学、社会科学、人文科学の知が連携し統合され応用されることで初めて成立すると言えるでしょう。繰り返しになりますが、人類はあらゆる科学を総動員して、コロナ禍に立ち向かっています。皆さんも、コロナ禍での二年間、困難な状況下にあっても、人文科学、社会科学、自然科学を学び続けられ、この式典に参加されていること、学長として、大変誇りを感じています。
　しかしながら、残念なことに、コロナ禍にあって、フェイクニュースがSNSをはじめ様々なメディアを通して流れ人類のこの営みを阻害しているということも現実であると思います。現代社会を象徴する言葉にVUCAがあることはみなさん、ご承知だと思います。Volatility=変動性、Uncertainty=不確実性、Complexity=複雑性、Ambiguity=曖昧性の頭文字をとって作られた造語です。まさに、未来への不安を煽る様な言葉に感じるかも知れません。コロナ禍も誰もが予想しなかった出来事であり、VUCAの時代を象徴する出来事であったと考えることも出来ます。
また、２月にウクライナ侵攻というニュースが世界を駆け巡りました。本学も所属会員である国立大学協会から、３月４日、次のようなメッセージが発せられました。
　「われわれ国立大学は、全世界の学問の自由が保障されるとともに、社会の平和と自由で安全な環境の実現を希求します。今回のウクライナ侵攻は、平和を願う私たち国際社会への挑戦であり、武力による一方的な現状変更の試みは、全く容認できないものです。侵攻の即時停止と、平和的な解決を強く望みます。何よりもウクライナにおける、未来を担う子供たちを始めとした人々の安全が確保される必要があります。また、日本国内のウクライナ及びロシアからの留学生、研究者及びそのご家族には、今回の事態に伴うトラブルや不利益が生じないよう、心のケアも含め、国立大学は適切に対応していきます。国立大学協会は、この危機に対し迅速な平和的解決が行われることを国際社会に訴えます。」（※）

　VUCAの時代であればこそ、皆さんには、卒業後、修了後も本学での学びを活かしていただければと思います。皆さんは、本学で人文科学、社会科学、自然科学の基礎と応用をしっかりと学ばれ、ここに居ます。科学とは、どのような科学であっても、エビデンスを重視し、自らの頭で考え、自分の言葉で伝え、皆で議論をし、真理を導き出そうとする営みです。エビデンスを基に、物事の本質を見極めることこそが「科学する心」です。このような時代こそ、「科学する心」が皆さんの道標になると確信します。大学での教育を含め永きにわたり、様々な方の支援を受け培った「科学する心」を忘れることなく、今後の人生を歩んでいただきたいと、強く感じています。

Message to Graduating Students in 2022

Congratulations, graduating undergraduate and graduate students! Today, 1,693 undergraduate, 807 graduate, and 22 Professional Degree Program students are completing their course and heading to the world from our Tokiwadai Campus. I would like to pay tribute to all of you for your efforts in your studies and research during your time at the university. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude and congratulations to your families and those related, who have warmly watched over you, on their support to and cooperation with our university.

In view of the situation with the novel coronavirus, we had no choice but to hold the graduation ceremony in-person with only graduating students. It was not an easy decision for us, considering the families who have been looking forward to this day, but we have made this decision with your health as our top priority. Graduating students will be moving on to new career paths, such as employment or higher education, from April. We would like to ask for your understanding so that you can take a new step forward with peace of mind, and so that we can prevent the further spread of infection both in Japan and abroad. Although the ceremony was held in this manner, it is truly a great pleasure for all of our faculty and staff to see all of you complete your studies at YNU and embark on a new chapter in your lives. On behalf of the faculty and staff of YNU, I would like to extend our congratulations once again. The President's message—"Aiming to be a world-class research university centered on knowledge integration”—has been issued continuously. I would like to consider this message and the Covid-19 crisis. There is a theory that the Black Death epidemic of the 14th century, or the “Plague,” was one of the factors that brought about the Renaissance from the 15th century onward. The theory is that humanity experienced the plague and needed to think deeply about life and death in order to escape from the deep despair for its own culture and civilization and that it took a century for the Renaissance to be achieved. What about the COVID-19? It is true that many people around the world have suffered greatly or are still suffering, but I believe that humanity has developed a vaccine in a very short time based on the knowledge of science and technology acquired since the modern era, and has utilized various social systems to confront the Covid-19. The development of modern natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities is the foundation of our fight against coronaviruses. Even if vaccines are developed by pharmaceutical companies or university laboratories, they must be produced safely and in large quantities, and the vaccines produced must be delivered to you reliably, and inoculated in a safe and secure manner. In other words, the vaccine is only possible when the knowledge of the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities are coordinated, integrated, and applied. Again, humanity is mobilizing all of its scientific resources to confront the Covid-19. As president of the university, I am very proud that you, too, have continued to study the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences during the two years of the Covid crisis, even under difficult circumstances, and that you are participating in this ceremony.

However, unfortunately, in the midst of the Covid crisis, it is also a reality that fake news is flowing through various media, including social networking services, and is hindering these activities of humankind. As you are probably aware, there is a word VUCA that symbolizes modern society. It is an acronym coined from the initial letters of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. You may feel that these words are exactly the kind of words that make you anxious about the future. The Covid crisis was an event that no one could have predicted, and it can be considered a symbolic event of the VUCA era.


In February, the news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine spread around the world. On March 4, the Japan Association of National Universities (JANU), of which our university is also a member, issued the following message.

“We, the national universities of Japan, aspire to the guarantee of academic freedom throughout the world and the realization of social peace and a free and safe environment. The recent invasion of Ukraine is a challenge to our international community desiring peace, and this unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force is completely unacceptable. We strongly hope for an immediate halt to the invasion and a peaceful resolution. Above all, the safety of the people of Ukraine, including the children who bear the future, must be ensured. In addition, national universities will take appropriate measures, including psychological care, to ensure that Ukrainian and Russian students and researchers and their families in Japan will not experience any trouble or disadvantages due to this situation. JANU appeals to the international community for a swift and peaceful resolution to this crisis.”

As the President of Yokohama National University, I strongly support the message of the Japan Association of National Universities. At the same time, in spite of such an unfortunate historical event for humanity, fake news and emotional discussions have been made regarding this incident as well. I feel it is very unfortunate.

In this era of VUCA, we hope that you will continue to make the most of the studies you have conducted at our university after graduation and after completion of your degree. You are here today after having built a solid foundation and application in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Science, no matter what kind of science it is, is an activity that emphasizes evidence, thinking for oneself, communicating in one's own words, discussing with others, and trying to derive the truth. Discerning the essence of things based on evidence is indeed the “scientific mind.” In these times, I am convinced that the “scientific mind” will be your guidepost. I strongly hope that you will never forget the “scientific mind” that you have cultivated through the support of various people over the years, including your education at the university, when you live your future lives.

In closing my remarks, I would like to express my sincere and strong hope that you will continue to lead healthy lives, both physically and mentally, and that you will take pride in what you have learned at Yokohama National University, and that you will grow up to be active at the center of members of the human race that create the future, with a “scientific mind.”
